NIGERIAN PORTS AUTHORITY (NPA)
Meaning: The management, controls and general operations of the seaports in Nigeria are handled by the Nigerian ports authority. The Ports Authority provides facilities at the port to ensure effective and efficient sea transportation, e.g, Lagos ports and Port Harcourt ports. The facilities provided at the seaport by the Nigerian Port Authority include: Berth, boats, cranes, fork-lifts, trailers, quay, wharf and harbours.
Functions of Ports Authority
Here we are going to be looking at the various functions of Nigerian Ports Authority:
- Provision of facilities: The Ports Authority provides facilities like berth, cranes, fork-lifts and navigational aids.
- Maintenance and improvement of Ports: The authority is responsible for the improvement of ports including dredging for early passage of ships.
- Revenue collections: The Ports Authority collects harbour and dock dues.
- Provision of Warehouse: Another functions of Nigerian Ports Authority is to provide Warehouse facilities at the dockyard.
- Supervision of loading and off loading of goods: The ports authority takes care of loading and unloading of vessels.
- Housing of security personnel: The Nigerian Ports authority duty is to provides office accommodation for immigration, Customs, shipping companies and the police operating at the ports.
- Maintenance facilities: Another functions of Ports is to provides re-fuelling and maintenance facilities.
- Provision of security: The ports authority duty is to provide security to monitor movement of ships, cargoes and people within and around the nations seaport.
