MEANING OF AGRICULTURE

Meaning: Agriculture is defined as a cultivation of the land for growing crops and rearing animals for the use of Man. The crops and animals are used in form of food, clothing, shelter, ornament and transport. The act of Farming is the center of Agriculture. The farm is where crops and animals are produced. Agriculture is more than mere production. This involves the processing of crops and animals products, transportation, storage, etc and selling them to consumers.

The Origin And Development Of Agriculture

The modern agriculture today began with the early men. To get food, they carried out hunting of animals in the bush and collecting wide fruits and other useful Forest things. These sources of food were not enough as the early men began to increase in numbers.

Later, the people observe that the seeds of plant previously thrown away germinated and grew into trees and started to produce fruits. Animals that are caught alive during hunting also were kept till when needed. Through these, planting of crops and keeping of animals started. When planting of crops and keeping of these animal started, the people began to have settled life. To till the land, simple crude implements where invented and they were able to provide sufficient food for the growing families.

With improvement on the simple Farm tools and increase in population, the people started to produce more than what the families needed. The exchange of product for products or for money began.

Because of improved farming technology and specialization by individuals, the production of crops and animals on commercial basis came into being. Today people grow crops like maize, cocoa, animals such as cattle, pigs, Poultry, sheep and others in order to make money. This include commercial agriculture.

Agriculture is very important and essential to individuals, countries and Nations of the world. It is regarded as the backbone of a nation’s domestic economy and the mother of all other businesses.

Below are The Importance of Agriculture

1. Provision of Food: People need food in order to live. Farm animals also need food. The food could be meat, eggs and milk from farm animals and products from the many different crops such as yam, rice, maize, beans and plantain. A nation that can provide food for her citizens can save a lot of people to buy other goods and services which cannot be provided through agriculture. A nation that cannot provide or produce enough food to feed her citizens cannot be described as a truly independent nation.

2. Provision Raw Materials For Industries: products from the farm are used in several Industries to produce different types of finished products. For example, cotton lint is used to produce clotting material. Cocoa beans are used to make chocolate, cocoa win and beverages. The skin of farm animals such as cattle is used in making bags and shoes.

3. Provision of Materials for Shelter: Agriculture is a source of materials used in building houses. Materials such as timber’s are used to build living houses. Timber products are also used to construct tables, chairs, beds and cupboards.

4. Provision of Employment: Many people are engaged in farming. Agriculture provides job for those persons involved in transportation of Farm products from the farm and villages to City and towns. Some persons are employed in Industries that produces and process Farm products in the markets.

5. Provision of Income to Farmers: Agriculture provides income for farmers when they sell crops product like yam, rice, plantain, cocoa, pineapple and farm animals products like meat and skin. Farmers use the money they get from the sale of Farm products to buy goods which they do not produce. The goods include radio, soap, chairs, clothing materials, bicycle, cars, houses etc.

6. Provision of Foreign Exchange: Agricultural provides foreign exchange or currency such as the dollar, pound sterling when agricultural product are exported to other countries. Agricultural products which are exported to earn foreign exchange by Nigerian include cocoa, groundnut, cola, palm produces, rubber sheets and lumps, cotton, etc.

7. Provision of Clothing: Agriculture provides materials such as cotton and wool used to produce clothing materials. Hides are skin are used to produce shoes and other leather wears which are used by people.

8. Provision For Transport: Some farm animals or livestock are used as means of traveling and carrying of loads. This mode of transportation is very common in northern part of Nigeria and some Arab world. Animals that serves as means of transport are the horses, donkey and camels.

9. Provision of Recreation of Sport: Some farm animals provide form of amusement and others are used for sporting activities. Animals like rabbit and elephant provide a lot of amusement. Horses are used for sports and pleasure rides.

10. Provision of Market for Manufactured Goods: Agriculture provide market for some industrial Products. Product like fertilizers, herbicides, agricultural machine and implements and animal equipment are manufactured by Industries because they are needed for agricultural production. Farmers buy them so that they can use them to grow crops and rear farm animals.

12. Development of Rural Areas: Agricultural development brings about the development of the villages where the Farmers lived and Farm. This can lead to the construction of good roads, provision of pipe borne water, electricity and schools for the children of farmers.
