Definition Of A Town
- A town is a large nucleated urban settlement.
- A town is formed from the expansion or combination of several villages.
- It contains several thousands of people.
- It has several social services like transport, banking, trading and social amenities like electricity, pipe-borne water, schools and telecommunications.

Characteristics Of A Town
Here are the characteristics of a town:
- A town is a relatively large and dense settlement with socially heterogeneous people who do not know one another very well.
- A town usually have nucleated (or dens settlements).
- They have people with different cultural background and languages.
- They are made up of many buildings with thousands of people living in them.
- They have abundant social amenities like electricity and pipe-borne water.
- They are mainly involved in secondary and tertiary activities such as manufacturing, construction and other services-oriented jobs.
Physical Features Of A Town
The physical features of a town include: relief, vegetation, climate and drainage.
- Relief: Relief of a town may either be on a lowland and fairly on plateau e.g, Jos. Majority of the towns are located on a lowland or land which is suitable for human settlement and establishment of many social cultural features like schools, markets, churches, mosques and roads.
- Climate: The climate of all the towns in Nigeria varies based on the location of such towns. Towns in the Southern parts of the country do experience equatorial type of climate with low temperature and heavy rainfall while the towns in the Northern part of Nigeria do experience tropical continental (dry) climate or Sudan climate with hot temperature and low rainfall.
- Drainage: Drainage refers to water bodies like rivers and lakes. While some towns may have rivers or lakes for domestic or individual use while other town may not have them. Such towns may either get water by government water projects or boreholes sunk by individuals.
- Vegetation: The vegetation of any town varies from one town to another. Forest vegetation is common to towns located in Southern parts of Nigeria while Savannah vegetation is common to towns located in the Northern parts of Nigeria.
Socio-cultural Features Of A Town
The socio-cultural features of a town include all the features which enables such town to exist and permits all human activities to strive. Such socio-cultural features are:
- Educational establishment: Majority of the towns do have primary and secondary schools, polytechnics, colleges of education and universities which are built to enable the citizens to acquire basic education.
- Markets: Market do exist in all town. The market may be big and its Activities are normally on daily basis where people trade in different commodities.
- Infrastructures: Many towns do have basic infrastructures like good roads, electricity and pipe-borne water. Most of the roads are tarred.
- Settlement: A settlement is a collection of buildings with people living in them. The town settlement is mainly an urban settlement. They are usually large, densely populated with social heterogeneous people who do not know one another very well. They are usually nucleated settlements.
- Religious activities: All towns are usually associated with religious activities where churches and mosques are established to serve as religious centers.
Direction And Location Of Physical And Cultural Features Within The Town
There are a wide variations in the direction and location of physical feature in a town setting while majority of the physical features in the town like rivers, mountains, lowland, vegetation are located naturally or by nature, lots of the cultural features are located or made by human activities.
Cultural features like schools, Markets, roads, churches and mosques are normally built by the people or by government which may be located in suitable places in the town. In other words, majority of the physical features are created by nature and remain where they are, the cultural features are made or established by the people and can be located in the suitable places within the town.
Functions Of A Town Or Economic Activities Or Influences Of Physical And Cultural Features Of The Town On Human Activities
A town performs a numerous functions which include:
- Industrial Function: Owing to the presence of Industries, the town is usually involved in manufacturing finish goods.
- Commercial Functions: The presence of large markets and banks enables people in the town to engage in commercial or trading activities.
- Socio-cultural Function: Towns are centers for the establishment of universities, polytechnic, churches, hotels, radio and television stations, etc.
- Mining Function: Where minerals are present in some towns like Enugu (coal), Jos (Tin) and warri (petroleum) the inhabitants tend to engage in mining activities.
- Fishing Function: Where rivers, lakes and oceans are found near the towns, the habitants also tend to engage in fishing activities.
- Residential Function: Owing to a large concentration of people in the town, the need therefore arises to build residential houses to cope with the ever-increasing influx of people.
